Why We Want Your Child to Outgrow Us
On a podcast appearance recently, our founder Kate was asked where Kids + Co.Lab is headed over the next few years. Her answer surprised even the host.
"I want kids to outgrow my service. And families to outgrow my service."
It’s not the line most therapy services lead with. But it’s the one that explains almost everything else about how we work.
Outgrowing us is the goal, not a failure
For a lot of families, therapy can start to feel like something you’re meant to need forever. That’s not how we see it. Kate has been clear that the aim isn’t just building your child’s skills in isolation — it’s “not just about building their capacities, but building all of the systems and people around them’s capacity” too. Your child’s progress should make your life easier, not create a new appointment you can never step away from.
Real inclusion is bigger than a therapy room
Kate’s vision for what “good” looks like goes past clinic walls.
"I would love the coffee shop and the swimming lessons and all of those places do that really proper inclusion stuff better."
Schools and kindy doing inclusion properly should be the bare minimum — not something families have to fight for. We’d love to see that same standard show up everywhere: swim school, the local cafe, birthday parties. Because the less a child needs one-on-one support just to belong somewhere, the better that system is actually working.
What “meeting you where you’re at” looks like on a Tuesday
It’s easy to say a practice is family-centred. We’d rather show you what that looks like in the small stuff. When our team calls a family for the first time, we don’t open with “This is Kids + Co.Lab OT Services calling.” We say, “Hi [Mum’s name], it’s [Therapist].” It’s a small detail, sitting on an internal document our whole team adds to — every new therapist or student who joins is asked what they’ve noticed us doing well, so the little things that actually make families feel looked after don’t just live in one person’s head.
Connected, not siloed
Co.Lab is in our name for a reason.
"That’s collaborative practice — we stay in touch with all the people around your child”.
Your paediatrician, your school, your other therapists, your NDIS team — we’d rather be the ones doing the coordinating in the background than leave you to be the translator between every service. Raising a child with complex needs already comes with enough to hold.
Where this leaves us
None of this means we’re trying to work ourselves out of a job overnight. It means every session has a bigger goal behind it: a family who needs us less over time, and a community around them that shows up more.
If that’s the kind of support you’re after, we’d love to hear from you.
